# Sign in with a passkey

**How do I sign in without a password?**

Add a passkey under “Settings” → “Security”. After that you sign in with “Sign in with a passkey” without a password, using your fingerprint, face or your device’s PIN. A passkey also counts as the second step when you sign in with your password.

A passkey is a key that your device or password manager creates for Metrunio, such as iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, Windows Hello or a security key. We never receive the secret part. Your device or password manager manages it, depending on the provider and your settings also backed up and synced with your other devices, and asks for your fingerprint, face or PIN to sign in. We hold the public part and management details, such as the passkey’s name and when it was last used.

## Add a passkey

1. Open the settings and choose “Add passkey” under “Passkeys” in the “Security” section.
2. Give it a name you will recognise, such as “Laptop”.
3. Confirm with your password. If you already have a second step, also confirm with a passkey, the code from the app or a recovery code.
4. Confirm the request on your device. The passkey then appears in the list.

> **Caution:** If this is your first second step, the page then shows ten recovery codes, exactly once. Write them down: without a passkey and without a code you will not get back into your account, not through “Forgot password” either.

## Signing in

- Without a password: choose “Sign in with a passkey” on the sign-in page and confirm the request on your device. Your device checks that it is you, so no second step follows.
- With your password: once you have a passkey, sign-in asks for the second step after your password. Choose “Confirm with a passkey”, or enter the code from the app if you have set that up too.
- The same applies to the link from the Shopify app: after the link, the portal asks for the passkey.

## What to know

- A passkey is tied to the portal’s address. Your browser does not use it on any other site, not even one that looks identical. A passkey does not protect against malware on your device.
- Passkeys need a secure connection and an up-to-date browser. A security key without a PIN cannot be added, because the passkey is also meant to sign you in without a password.
- Up to ten passkeys per account. The list shows when each one was created and last used.
- A passkey that leaves another passkey or the app in place is removed after a confirmation on the page. If it is your last second step, you need your password and this passkey or a recovery code, just as when switching off the app.
- A removed passkey stays in your password manager until you delete it there. It no longer signs you in to Metrunio.
- A new password set through “Forgot your password?” does not remove any passkeys. If a device is gone, remove its passkey in the settings and end all sessions with “Sign out everywhere”.
- Adding and removing are recorded in the change log of every tenant you belong to, and its admins see it.
- What we store about a passkey, who else receives it and when we delete it is described in the privacy policy under “Signing in with passkeys”.

> **Note:** An account without a password, for example one that signs in with a company account or comes from the Shopify app, adds a passkey within fifteen minutes of signing in. The demo guest account and platform administration accounts have no passkeys.
