Setup: six phases, eleven steps
The setup assistant takes you through six phases, from “Company & DPA” to “Check the first journey”; behind them are eleven steps, the same for every integration route. The second step is concluding the data processing agreement, without which nothing is measured. The assistant saves progress automatically and can be interrupted at any time; going live also needs access to the ad accounts, the connection to your consent tool and, depending on your company, internal approvals.
What do I have to do before the first data arrives?
| Phase | Steps |
|---|---|
| 1 · Company & DPA | Confirm your company. Conclude the DPA: without a data processing agreement Metrunio accepts nothing; the step cannot be ticked off, only completed. |
| 2 · Website & integration | Add a website: site ID and write key are created automatically. Choose how to integrate: Shopify app, plugin for Shopware 6 or WordPress, Google Tag Manager, snippet or server API; the app, the plugins and the tag manager need no developer, the server API and funnel steps need code. |
| 3 · Consent | Connect consent: select your consent tool and map the categories. |
| 4 · Install & check | Install the tracking: the finished code is ready to copy. Test the connection: the live test below checks by itself whether data arrives and shows each check individually. If nothing is installed yet, “Open the demo shop” or “Send a test event” creates the first signal. The first signal completes both steps. A test event shows up as “Test event received”, not as a detected script, and the button then reads “Continue with test data”. |
| 5 · Goal & test conversion | Define a conversion: what counts as a completion? For an application without a purchase, choose “Steps in an application (SaaS)”; that creates three funnel steps you can adapt. Run a test conversion. |
| 6 · Check the first journey | Check the first data. Finish the setup; you can reset the test data afterwards. |
The list next to the assistant shows these six phases; the card next to it names the phase above every step. Above the list you see roughly how long the rest takes. If you leave the assistant, you return to the same place at your next sign-in.
You change the integration method in the setup assistant: in the installation instructions, or after setup is complete via “Change integration method”. Another website starts in the assistant with the choice of integration method.
How long it takes up to the first verified test journey is shown on the website’s “Installation” page only once it has been measured on completed setups. Until then it lists the steps and requirements for each integration route instead of a figure.
The last step completes itself: as soon as the ten steps before it are done, progress stands at 100 per cent and setup counts as finished, not before. Some steps are ticked off without a click because their result is there, such as the installation once the first event has arrived.
You can prepare the installation before the DPA. Nothing will arrive, though, until it is concluded; until then the live test names exactly that reason, and anything sent before is lost for good. How to conclude it is described in “How do I conclude the data processing agreement?”.
Note
If a step stalls, the setup health centre helps: it checks the connection on its own and names the cause and next step for every finding.

- How do I conclude the data processing agreement?
How do I conclude the DPA with Metrunio, and why is nothing measured before?
For every account, measurement starts only once the data processing agreement (DPA) is concluded; until then Metrunio accepts nothing and stores nothing. You conclude it in the portal under “Privacy” or in the setup step “Conclude the DPA”, and for a Shopify store also right in the app: enter the company, its address and the person concluding it, confirm they are authorised, done. Data arrives a few seconds later, without any change to your installation.

How do I add another website or domain?
Under “Setup → Websites and allowed domains”, “Add a website” opens the form, also for a second website; during the first run of the setup it is a step of its own. A name and the full address are enough; the site ID and write key are created automatically. Adding it needs no DPA, measuring does.
- How do I connect Google Tag Manager?
How do I install Metrunio through Google Tag Manager?
You add the “Metrunio Tracking” template from the Tag Manager template gallery or download it as a file in “Setup”. You create a tag from it, enter site ID and write key, choose the trigger “Initialization - All Pages” and publish. This route needs no change to your website’s source code.
- How do I test my first conversion?
How do I check that a conversion arrives correctly?
The setup assistant has a step called “Run a test conversion”. It creates a test purchase with a test visit before it, both stored as test data: they appear immediately in the live checklist, the journey shows an attributed touchpoint, and they stay excluded from standard reports.
- What is a funnel step?
How do I measure a funnel when there is no purchase?
A funnel step is a conversion a customer reaches rather than buys: signed up, set up, first payment. Each step has a key and a position and counts exactly once per customer, however often it is reported. Several steps in order make up the funnel in the “Orders & goals” report.
