How do I sync ad spend automatically?

Under “Data connections” you connect an ad account, and Metrunio fetches daily cost per campaign on its own, first a few minutes after connecting, then about every six hours and retroactively, because the platforms revise their figures. “Fetch now” on the card requests an extra fetch in between. For Google Ads and Meta you sign in; for TikTok, LinkedIn and Microsoft Advertising you enter an access token, which is stored encrypted.

Can Metrunio fetch cost directly from Meta and Google Ads?

Note

Fetching costs is part of cost import and runs from the Pro plan. On the Start plan no ad account fetches costs. After a downgrade you still see your connections and can disconnect them (see “After a downgrade” below).

PropertyBehaviour
PlatformsMeta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn Ads, Microsoft Advertising
Cadenceevery six hours
First fetcha few minutes after connecting
Fetch nowon request, at the earliest five minutes after the last fetch
Lookbackconfigurable number of days, because platforms revise figures
Matchingby the external ID (the platform’s campaign ID), falling back to the name, case-insensitive and with whitespace collapsed
Unmatchedskipped, not guessed; the card lists the campaigns and you assign them there
Manual entriesnever overwritten
Test modefetches and counts the costs but writes nothing until you apply them
  1. 01Open “Data connections”, go to the “Receive costs” section and click “Connect ad account”.
  2. 02Pick the platform. For Google Ads and Meta you sign in and then choose the ad account from a list; for the others you enter the account ID and an access token.
  3. 03The connection starts in test mode: after the first fetch its card shows how many rows were fetched and which campaigns could not be matched to a campaign in Metrunio.
  4. 04Assign those campaigns under “Unmatched campaigns” (see below). If that looks right, click “Apply costs”. The next fetch follows within a few minutes and writes the costs.
  5. 05You can pause, switch accounts or change the lookback at any time under “Edit”; “Disconnect” deletes the stored access, costs already fetched stay.

If the connection runs through the Google Ads or Meta sign-in, you switch accounts under “Edit” with “Choose an account from the existing sign-in”: you pick from the accounts that sign-in shares, with no new dialog at the platform. If the account belongs to a different login, use “Sign in with another Google account” (or Meta). The details are under “Where do I get the advertising platforms’ credentials?”.

Caution

The token goes in but never comes back out. Only the last four characters are shown: enough to tell which account is meant, too little to use it.

Fetch now

If you changed something in the ad account or fixed an error at the platform, you do not have to wait for the next six-hour run: “Fetch now” on the card requests a fetch. The card shows “Fetch requested” until it has run (usually within a few minutes), and then the result. The same happens on its own when you connect an ad account, resume a paused connection, leave test mode or change the access, the account or the lookback.

Note

After a fetch, no further one can be requested for five minutes; until then the button reads “Available again from …” with the time. Every fetch counts against your quota at the platform, and the platforms do not update their figures by the minute anyway. A paused connection and one without access fetch nothing, even on request.

Assigning unmatched campaigns

Metrunio does not create campaigns on its own. A campaign’s channel decides which channel its conversions are attributed to, and a Google Ads campaign can be search, display or video. That is not guessed. Costs of a platform campaign that matches no campaign in Metrunio therefore stay out until you assign it.

  1. 01Open “Data connections” and, in the “Receive costs” section, expand “Unmatched campaigns” on the platform’s card. Each campaign is listed with its name, its platform ID and its cost in the fetched period, the most expensive first.
  2. 02If the campaign already exists in Metrunio, choose “Assign to …” and the campaign. Active campaigns without an external ID are offered.
  3. 03Otherwise choose “Create as campaign”. The name is prefilled with the platform’s; you pick the channel yourself. The usual one for this platform is shown next to it.
  4. 04Either way the campaign gets the platform ID as its external ID, and a fetch is requested right away, even within the five minutes after the last one. A few minutes later the campaign has left the list.

Note

A campaign carries exactly one external ID, and an ID belongs to exactly one campaign. If the same ads run on two platforms, create one campaign per platform. You change the ID of an existing campaign under “Campaigns” with “Change ID”.

Matching by name also works when names differ only in case, in double or non-breaking spaces or in how an umlaut is encoded. Hyphens and other punctuation do count: “Sale – DE” and “Sale - DE” can be two campaigns. The ID is safer than any name, because it does not change when a campaign is renamed. If two platform campaigns match the same campaign in Metrunio, one by ID and one by name, their costs are added up per day.

Note

The list shows at most the 200 most expensive campaigns of a fetch and appears only after the first fetch since 28 September 2026; before that the card shows only their number.

When a source has not delivered yet

If an enabled connection has not yet delivered for the end of the period (its last successful fetch is more than two days earlier, or it has never delivered), the overview shows no ad spend, CPA, CAC or ROAS but the reason and the source with its last fetch. A total that is too small would look like a real one. The channel comparison and the budget keep their rows and carry a notice above them; the assistant and the read API say the same. After the next successful fetch the figures are back. Connections in test mode and paused ones do not count as a source.

After a downgrade

If your plan no longer includes cost sync, for instance after moving to Start, your connections stay listed under “Data connections”. Their card shows the status “paused” in red, with the note “not in your plan”, because nothing is fetched any more, and the reason is stated above the list. Costs already recorded are kept and stay in your reports.

  • Disconnect still works if your role may change connections: the stored access is deleted, the fetched costs stay. You do not need to upgrade to tidy up.
  • Locked are Edit, “Fetch now”, Pause, “Apply costs” and assigning unmatched campaigns. You can add a new connection only once your plan includes the sync again; where the “Connect ad account” button would be, the page says which plan includes it and links to billing.
  • Upgraded again, the connections resume fetching on the next run, with their previous account and mode. Until the first fetch after the upgrade, the card may still show the note from the paused period that nothing was fetched; it disappears with the first successful fetch.

  • How do I import ad spend from a CSV?

How do I get my media cost into Metrunio?

Under “Data connections”, in the “Receive costs” section, four routes sit side by side: connect an ad account, import a CSV file, connect a shared sheet that Metrunio reads every day, or enter single days by hand. The CSV import maps rows to a campaign and a day and can be withdrawn as a whole; a template is available for download.

  • Can I send conversions back to the advertising platforms?

    How does conversion pushback work?

From the Growth plan, conversions go back to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn and Microsoft Advertising. Matching happens exclusively through each platform’s click identifier: fbclid, gclid, ttclid, li_fat_id or msclkid. Conversions without a matching click are skipped with a stated reason. Per destination you choose whether purchases are reported with the revenue or the contribution margin, and whether only purchases by new customers go out.

  • How do I structure channels and campaigns?

Which levels exist, and how deep do I need to model them?

The structure has five levels: channel, campaign, ad group, ad, creative. Channel and campaign are required; you only create the deeper levels if you want to evaluate at that level.

  • How do I evaluate individual Meta and Google Ads ads?

How do I see costs and attributed orders per ad?

With the creative level, Metrunio fetches costs, impressions and clicks per ad from Meta and Google Ads and attributes to an ad the visits whose link carries its ID in utm_content: utm_content={{ad.id}} on Meta, utm_content={creative} on Google Ads. Without that ID a visit is listed under “Not attributable”. If the “Ads” column is missing from the campaign breakdown under “Attribution”, the creative level has not yet been enabled for your account.
