How do I check on my website what the tracking script does?

Use the debug panel. Under “Setup → Live test” you create a debug link that is valid for one hour. Open your website with it, and a panel in the top right shows whether the script runs, what the consent status is, which events it sent and how Metrunio responded. Only people who open the link see it.

Is there a debugger for tracking right on the website?

How to open the panel

  1. 01Open “Setup” and the “Live test” card there.
  2. 02Under “Debug panel on your website”, choose “Create debug link”.
  3. 03“Open website with debug panel” opens the start address of your website with the link. For another page, copy the link and change the path; keep the part with metrunio-debug.
  4. 04Make a choice in the banner and click through, for example up to the order. The panel refreshes every second.

What the panel shows

SectionWhat you see
Tracking scriptWhether it runs, site ID, measurement address, test or live mode, waiting events and whether the session has been counted. If it does not start, the reason is shown, for example a placeholder instead of the write key.
ConsentThe decision as the script knows it, separately for analytics and marketing. With the consent bridge, also the detected tool, the entries it looks for and notes as in the consent check.
EventsEvery event on this page with its state: waiting for the decision, dropped, accepted, or rejected with an error code.
CampaignThe campaign identifiers in the address, that is UTM parameters and the click ID with its platform, and what the session started with.

Good to know

  • The link is valid for one hour and only for the website you created it for. If the page runs a script with another site ID, the panel says so and shows nothing else.
  • A bare parameter such as metrunio-debug=1 shows nothing. Visitors to your website never see the panel, and without a valid link the script does not load it.
  • The panel stays open as you click on, because the script carries the link into the address of the next page. If your website sends no referrer or the checkout is on another domain, open the copied link on the page you want to check.
  • The panel only reads what the script does in your browser. It sends nothing and stores nothing on your device. The link does not end up in your data either: the script removes it from the address and the referrer before it sends events.
  • If the Content Security Policy of your website does not allow the measurement address, the panel does not load, and the browser console reports DEBUG_PANEL_UNAVAILABLE. The tracking script itself needs the same permission.
  • On German-language pages the panel shows German, otherwise English.

Note

The debug panel complements the live test. The live test shows in the portal what arrives at Metrunio; the panel shows on the website what happens before that. If nothing arrives in the live test, the panel usually tells you why.

Through the consent bridge, without you calling metrunio.setConsent yourself: for thirteen tools this small additional script reads the decision from your banner and passes it to Metrunio, including every later withdrawal. The installation code in the portal contains it as soon as you choose your tool in the consent step, and the Shopware plugin adds it by itself.
