Campañas y medición

Are Google, Bing and others recognised automatically?

Automatically, with nothing to set up at Google or Bing. Metrunio reads the origin from what the browser sends anyway: the referrer and the platforms’ click identifiers (gclid, msclkid, fbclid, ttclid). Channel and source therefore appear in the report straight away. You only need to connect something if you also want campaign names and cost: that is what linking the ad account is for.

Do I have to set anything up at Google or Bing for the source to be recognised?

Every measured touchpoint gets a channel and, where it can be recognised, a source. Both come from signals that are already on the address. Nothing has to be added by hand.

SignalBecomesSetup needed?
gclid, msclkidPaid SearchNo, auto-tagging is enough
fbclid, ttclidPaid SocialNo

Referrer facebook.com, linkedin.comOrganic SocialNo
Referrer chatgpt.com, perplexity.aiAI assistantsNo
Referrer mail.google.comEmailNo
No signal at allDirect–

With analytics-only consent, Metrunio keeps only which platform a gclid, fbclid and the like came from. That is enough for the channel. The ID itself is kept only with marketing consent; it is needed only for reporting back to the platform.

What you do have to connect

  • Campaign, ad and creative names: a click identifier says the click came from Google, but not which campaign it came from. For that, connect the ad account under “Data connections” or use a tracking link of your own.
  • Ad spend, CAC and ROAS: cost sits with the platform and arrives over the same connection.
  • Post-view: viewable impressions need the impression pixel and the viewability tag in the creative; they receive a share from the Pro plan.

Note

An unknown referrer does not disappear: it appears as “Referral” under its host name. Nothing is invented: where every signal is missing the channel is “Direct”, and that means “we do not know where from”, not “someone typed the address”.

Caution

The referrer is sometimes missing: clicks from apps, from PDF documents, and from pages with a strict referrer policy. Those visits appear under “Direct”. Where the origin matters to you, add UTM parameters or a tracking link as well.

Your own rules for hosts only you know

The built-in list cannot know that partner.example.com is your affiliate network, and on someone else’s site you cannot set a UTM parameter either. Under “Settings → Your own origin rules” you enter the host and give it a name; a channel only if you want to change it.

  1. 01Enter the host without https:// and without www. It also applies to every subdomain below it.
  2. 02Give the source the name it should carry in the report.
  3. 03Pick a channel if the classification should differ from the detected one. Left empty, the detected channel stays.

Note

Where several rules match, the more specific one wins: shop.example.com before example.com. Your own rule beats the built-in list: whoever creates it knows the host better than a table in our code.

Recognition applies from the day it was switched on, a rule of your own from the day you create it. Touchpoints measured before then keep the classification they had. A report from yesterday should show the same number today.

  • Do I still need UTM parameters?

How do UTM parameters relate to Metrunio click tracking?

UTM parameters are still read and stored, but they are the weaker source. Where a Metrunio click URL is in use, a signed click with an unambiguous identifier is created; UTM remains useful for channels where you cannot set your own tracking link.

  • How do I structure channels and campaigns?

Which levels exist, and how deep do I need to model them?

The structure has five levels: channel, campaign, ad group, ad, creative. Channel and campaign are required; you only create the deeper levels if you want to evaluate at that level.

  • Which attributes are linked?

How does Metrunio know that two signals belong together?

Only through unambiguous identifiers: session ID, pseudonymous first-party ID, click ID, impression ID, view identifier, pseudonymised customer identifier, and order or lead number. Nothing else.
