Why do I see fewer visits than in GA4?

Usually because of consent: Metrunio only counts visits from people who consented to analytics and does not add the others back in. In advanced Consent Mode, GA4 can send cookieless measurements without consent and, above a minimum amount of data, model the behaviour of those who decline. Detected bots, test data and small differences in the terms add to this.

Why does Metrunio show fewer visits than Google Analytics?

Two tools, the same website, two different numbers. That is rarely an error. Usually the two tools are simply not counting the same people.

The reasons, most important first

ReasonMetrunioGA4
Consentcounts only visitors who consented to analytics; how many events were not recorded for lack of consent is shown at the top of web analyticsin advanced Consent Mode, sends cookieless measurements without consent and, above a minimum amount of data, models the behaviour of those who decline
Botsdetected bots are not counted; detection uses the user agentexcludes traffic from known bots
New visitafter a 30-minute break and when someone comes back through a new campaignafter a 30-minute break, adjustable; a new campaign does not start a new session

The first reason almost always weighs most, and how much depends on your banner: if a large share declines, a large share is missing in Metrunio. The third reason works the other way. If someone comes back through a second ad within half an hour, that is two visits in Metrunio and one in GA4.

What else plays a part

  • Test data: events from the live test are not counted in web analytics.
  • Ad blockers: if the script runs through your own measurement domain, it is blocked less often. Metrunio may then see visits that GA4 misses.
  • Visitors: Safari may delete the identifier in the browser after seven days without a visit. If the person comes back after that, they are a new visitor.
  • Time zone: Metrunio cuts days in your account’s time zone. If GA4 is set to another one, the day boundaries shift.

How to check whether consent is the reason

  1. 01Open “Web analytics” and read the notice at the top: it states how many events in the period were not recorded for lack of consent.
  2. 02Check in the live test whether your banner reports consent and refusal to Metrunio correctly.
  3. 03Compare the same period in the same time zone, and in GA4 compare sessions, not users.

Note

Metrunio does not fill the gap. The figures describe visitors with consent; how much is missing is shown in the notice as a number of events, not visits. The statements about GA4 follow Google’s own help on sessions, Consent Mode and bot traffic; the source for Consent Mode is on the comparison page of the website.

What does web analytics in Metrunio show me?

Under “Web analytics” you see, on every plan, how many page views, visits and visitors your website has, how long visitors stay active and how many leave right away. You can view it per day or, for periods of up to 14 days, per hour, split by channel, page and technology. Only visitors who consented to analytics are counted; nothing is extrapolated.

  • What is a bounce?

When does a visit count as a bounce?

A visit is a bounce when it was not engaged: less than 10 seconds of active time, only one page view and no conversion. The bounce rate is the share of these visits among all visits in the period, counted for visitors who consented to analytics.

  • Why does Metrunio not measure without consent?

Other tools advertise measurement without a cookie banner. Why does Metrunio not do that?

Because Metrunio attributes orders to the advertising before them and has to recognise a browser over several days to do so: that only works with an identifier on the device, and in our cautious assessment Metrunio may create one only with consent. Without consent, Metrunio counts orders your server reports in revenue, with their order number and without browser, customer or advertising identifiers, but attributes them to no advertising; the attribution rate and post-view coverage show you how large that gap is. This is our product decision, not a verdict on other tools: whether one may measure without consent depends on what it measures.

  • How do I check my consent status?

How do I make sure consent takes effect correctly?

With two checks that show different things. The rule check under “Setup → Consent” runs six cases against your saved setting, without your website. Whether the website reports consent and withdrawal correctly only shows in the live test with real page views: for each signal the time, source and reported consent status.

  • Are bots filtered out?

Do automated requests distort my numbers?

Obvious bots are detected through a user-agent heuristic and excluded. That is not full bot management.

  • How do I measure over my own domain?

How do I set up a custom measurement domain so ad blockers cost me less data?

In “Setup” you enter a name such as gauge.your-domain.com, and Metrunio gives you three DNS records at once (two CNAME and one TXT). Once they are in place and a certificate has been issued for your name, the address goes live; with the snippet or Tag Manager you then switch your setup, while the Shopify app and the plugins for Shopware and WordPress switch themselves. Measurement then runs first-party and is cut less often by ad blockers and browser tracking protection.
